Vipassanā means seeing things as they are. As the name of a specific course of training, it most often refers to the ten-day residential courses taught in the tradition of S. N. Goenka, in the lineage of Sayagyi U Ba Khin.
A course runs ten full days in silence. The first days establish attention on the breath; the technique proper is introduced partway through; the last day breaks silence before participants leave. Courses are residential, and are run on donation — there is no charge for the teaching, the food or the accommodation.
Where to find a course
- dhamma.org — locations, dates and registration, worldwide
- Vipassana Research Institute — the tradition’s publisher, including The Discourse Summaries
- Pariyatti — the books in print
Nothing on this site is instruction in the technique. It is taught in person, on a course, and that is deliberate on the tradition’s part.
